How to keep your skin hydrated and moisturized this Ramadan

How to keep your skin hydrated and moisturized this Ramadan

by Safiya Younas

I think all of us can agree that during Ramadan, our skin is more dry and dehydrated from the lack of water we put into our systems. Parched lips and dull skin might be distracting you from your daily Ramadan supplications. Fear, not ladies! I’m here to help. First, let me tell you the difference between dry and dehydrated skin...yes there’s a difference. Dehydrated skin lacks water, dry skin lacks oil. So maybe you’re thinking your skin is dry but really it’s dehydrated. And maybe you think your skin is dehydrated, but your skin is dry. There are some signs to look for that can help determine which one you are. P.S…..You can be both! I personally am.

"Dehydrated skin lacks water, dry skin lacks oil"

Dehydrated skin comes with signs of small fine lines in places where your natural face doesn’t crease. Your skin will look like Spongebob when he’s been squeezed out. An example to think about is simply a fruit. A dried grape is dry, not because it lacks oil, but because it’s been stripped of its juice a.k.a its water. If you have dehydrated skin, this means you will be looking for products that help with putting water back into your skin. Most of these products come in the form of serums or gels. Here are some products to get you started…….

Dry skin comes with signs of cracked skin. Think like cracked concrete. Your skin may also look ashy. If you have dry skin you will be looking for products that put oil back into your skin. Most of these products are thick moisturizers that seal in moisture. Here are some products to get you started….

  • Weleda Skinfood
  • Weleda skin food light
  • Glossier Priming Moisturizer rich
  • Nivea Creme
  • La Roche Posay  Lipikar Balm AP+ Intense Repair Moisturizing Cream
  • Lano allover cream
  • La Roche Posay Cicaplast Baume B5 Multi-purpose cream
  • Lano Fly mask
  • Heritage Rosehip seed oil

Like I have said before, you can be both, dry and dehydrated, in that case, you should be sure to look at moisturizers that have both hydrating ingredients and emollient ingredients. Or, you can use a hydrating serum before your moisturizer.

It can be tricky to find a lip balm that works. Your go-to chapstick isn’t really made to moisturize or heal your lips, they are just made to make a barrier between your lips and the environment so that they don’t become damaged further.

Here are some suggestions for lip balms:

Lano’s products tend to be thick and sticky because their main ingredient is Lanolin, a very emollient ingredient. I personally enjoy thick and sticky lip balms. If you don’t, the Glossier Balm Dotcom’s are all the hype. They are extremely moisturizing yet still easy and light on the lips.

May this Ramadan be a blessing to you and may you find comfort in some of these products. Ameen.
